“Transfer Boards” are a simple wonderful tool.

How to measure and use a transfer board. If you are the patient, and you have upper body strength, then transfer options (board, sheet, or disc) may be just for you.  Performing a patient transfer requires serious thought.  Think about the distance of the gap(s), as an example, the length of the area between the wheelchair and the bed. And your ability to move or carry a transfer board. If a caregiver is involved, consider their abilities also.

A transfer board will help transfer a person between surfaces of similar or slightly different heights.  The average rule of “a third, a third, a third” should be thought of, place one third of the board on the surface you are transferring from, place another third onto the surface you are transferring to, and the remaining third is the space in between the two transfer points.

Also be aware that a non-slip substance should be present on the bottom of the board. This will help to keep the board in place so that no one falls during the process.

An option for a larger person is a bariatric board, these boards can hold up to 600 pounds. They are available in two types of material; plastic or wood (pine, oak, birch) and can be purchased with or without handle cut-outs.
