Canes can be wonderful tools if you have the correct cane. There are many kinds of canes, with many different qualities. You may even want more than one, some people have one to use indoors and one for outdoors. Another person has a fancy decorated cane for going out for special occasions, and a plain cane for getting around their home. If you get weak while taking a walk, a cane with a built-in seat may help.

There are helpful tips on what to look for.

1. Canes are created to support up to a certain number of pounds.  Always check to see that you fall within the guidelines.
2. Canes can be adjustable.  It’s important that the cane is tall enough to allow the user to stand “straight”, no more than slightly bent over. If the cane is not adjustable, then be sure to order it at the correct length.
3. The tip or “feet” of the cane’s ideal for the surface you want to use it for.
4. The hand grip on top of the cane can be the standard type of hand grip or it can be an ergonomic handle. The hand grip can be made of different materials.  Foam, plastic, rubber just to name a few. 
5. Some canes come with a carrying strap or a travel bag.  Both are nice conveniences.
6. Some canes have bases that will support the cane so that it stands upright without leaning.  Which can be very good if there is a problem leaning over to pick up a cane.
